The origins of blackjack

The exact origins of blackjack are unknown, however, the earliest record of the game’s existence is a reference in a short story by Miguel de Cervantes. The short story, which was published in the early 1600s, described a game called ventiuna (21 in Spanish). The name blackjack, however, was not coined for another 200 years.

On arriving in the United States, gambling houses made use of bonus payouts for particular hands to market the game and to stimulate interest. One such bonus payout was a 10:1 bonus if a player received a hand that included the ace of spades and a black jack(spades or clubs). The bonus payout was called a blackjack and the name stuck – or so the story goes.

How to play online blackjack

The aim of the online casino games title is to receive or build a hand total that is as close to or equal to 21. The player competes against the dealer to see who can get a better hand total.

Play starts with a betting phase. Once bets are placed, each player (including the dealer) receives a two-card hand. If the player receives a blackjack (any two-card hand containing an ace and a 10-valued card), play ends and the player receives a 3:2 payout. Otherwise, a player is able to either Stay (keep the hand value of their two-card hand) or Hit (receive extra cards to get closer to 21). Should a player’s hand total exceed 21, the player is Bust and play ends.

Once a player is happy to stay with their hand total, the dealer then has a chance to either Stay or Hit. Most blackjack rules require the dealer to Hit on an initial hand total of 16 or less and Stay on a hand total of 17 or more. Once the dealer is required to stay the players hand is compared to the dealers. Should the player’s hand be closer to 21 than that of the dealer, the player is paid out at 1:1.

Calculating hand totals

An online blackjack hand total is calculated by added each card-value of a player’s hand together. Face cards carry a card-value of 10, numbered cards carry their face value and aces can either be 11 or 1.
