Part of the reason why 21 is such a popular game is the fact that its rules are so simple. The goal of this casino game is to get as close to 21 before the dealer does.
At the start of the game, players place their bets. Once the bets have been placed, the player and the dealer are dealt two facedown cards each. The player and the dealer then evaluate their respective hands to see how close their collective values are to 21.
The values of cards in Blackjack are calculated as follows:
If the player’s two-card hand contains an ace and any card with a value of 10, then they have a Blackjack (21) and win the game. Blackjacks are paid out on a 3:2 basis. If the player’s hand totals less than 21, they have the choice to either Hit (receive more cards from the deck in order to get closer to 21) or Stay (stick to their current card value). The risk with choosing to hit is that the additional cards may cause the player’s hand total to exceed 21, in which case the player is bust and play ends. Once the player is satisfied with his or her hand total, the dealer has the option to either hit or Stay. In most Blackjack variants, the dealer is obligated to Hit on any initial hand total less than or equal to 16 and must Stay once their hand total equals or exceeds 17. At this point, the player and dealer compare hands to see whose is closer to 21. The player is paid out at 1:1 if their hand wins.
Nobody knows exactly when 21 first came into being but the earliest historical mention of the game is found in a Miguel de Cervantes short story, in which the author describes a game called ventiuna (21 in Spanish). Legend has it that the name “Blackjack” only emerged 200 years later in the United States, where gambling houses paid a special bonus for a hand containing an ace of spades and a black jack (clubs or spades) and the rest is history.
Next to top Blackjack titles, Vegas Palms offers Canadian players a wide variety of table games, such as Roulette and Baccarat.
