Nothing gets fans going like seeing their favourite celebrity doing something normal. It’s odd to even think about it, but for many, celebrities clearly aren’t normal people. They’re sort of elevated above average people, to some sort of deity state. But, it just so happens that celebrities are as normal as the next person and they go grocery shopping, play casino games and walk the dog too!
In some cases, celebrities will go out of their way to try and rebrand their image, allowing themselves to be seen doing something that humanises them. It might be a publicity stunt in some cases, but it also goes a long way for fans to realise that the person they worship really is just like them.
Celebrities Undercover Television Show
The short-lived television show Celebrities Undercover tried to do exactly this, which is one of many ways in which celebrities have dared to “mingle with the commoners.”
This interesting television show, running for only seven episodes, saw a number of celebrities mingle with fans, or undertake interesting tasks. But, of course, the celebrities were disguised, and their interactions filmed with hidden cameras.
In a few of the shows segments, actor Anthony Anderson disguised himself as a chef, Ice-T listened to a focus group on his own products, and Fantasia attended an audition for a musical about her life.
Many were quick to see that the show seemed to be publicising various things on behalf of the celebrity, causing it to quickly lose some creditability. The interactions of the celebrities and fans were 100% real however, giving much insight into the true nature of these big names.
YouTube Prank Videos
In other cases, however, celebrities seem to undergo genuinely good-natured efforts to simply interact with fans, and get a few laughs. A popular YouTube video saw musician Jon Bon Jovi run a karaoke club, serving drinks to guests, simply to prank them. Getting shrieks of delight upon revealing himself, Jon went a long way to humanising himself, and changing his image to a more likeable person. He had not been unlikeable prior, but certainly gained much credibility as a nice guy in the space of one short video.
Another, similar YouTube video saw extremely popular band U2 play disguised in a subway. Pretending to be buskers, the band played as public subway users walked by, not aware that they were in the presence of one of the most popular bands in the world. Again, fans shrieked in delight upon the celebrities revealing themselves.
Nice Person Images
Some celebrities gain reputations for being unlikeable, rude to fans, and generally drop in the popularity rankings in the process. Actor Shia Labeouf, for example, is known for being unfriendly, and often downright rude to fans that approach him. Likewise Kanye West has a reputation of being outright unbearably arrogant, and none too bright. You know you’ve gone too far when president Obama calls you a “jackass”!
And, of course, the notorious Mel Gibson, who all but destroyed his career with his racial slurs, and an aggressive attitude. In a matter of just a few years Mel Gibson went from being a well-liked and respected actor and director, to someone who could hardly get work in Hollywood.
Such reputations are not great for a celebrity that relies on the love of fans. Hence, the reason that some celebrities will go to such lengths to ensure they appear pleasant, approachable and normal. If it is or isn’t strictly for the purpose of good PR is debatable, but either way, fans still love to see famous people interacting with fans.
