Motor shows have been around for a very long time, but their future as a collective is starting to look precarious. Volkswagen, the premium manufacturer of vehicles that has been around for many decades, has cemented this notion by deciding not to attend the 2020 edition of the Paris Motor Show – or the Mondial de l’Auto. The revelation has come as a big blow, especially considering VW’s status as a core vehicle brand. This year, VW fans may be better off staying at home and playing online mobile casino games if they want to enjoy a truly satisfying experience!
The 2020 Paris Motor Show is scheduled for the first half of October, and usually showcases new cars from all of the world’s best manufacturers. Alas, a number of French publications have already begun to report that the VW main brand will not be attending the event in the City of Lights. Interestingly, the company chose not to attend the 2018 version of the event either, showing a definite trend beginning to appear.
Shows No Longer Financially Viable
The move may seem surprising at first glance, but VW actually has a solid reason behind it. Speaking with journalists at a recent conference, Member of the Board of Management Volkswagen Brand for Sales, Marketing and After Sales Jurgen Stackmann, was asked whether his company would be representing itself at the Paris Motor Show in 2020. His response? “Probably not.” He added in his statement that his firm has no plans at all to attend the show this year.
The biennial Paris Motor Show alternates with the Frankfurt Motor Show. Last year, the latter was hit hard by a significant drop in its number of visitors from 810,000 in 2017, to just 560,000 in 2019. Experts believe that VW’s choice to skip the upcoming French event has to do with the declining popularity of IAA.
The firm is concerned about the decline in the number of visitors, which would mean less exposure for its brand and vehicles. Ultimately, attending the Paris Motor Show is just not financially viable for VW unless enough people attend to make it so. The fewer people that attend, the lower the chances that prominent auto-manufacturers will cough up the funds necessary to take part.
Other VW Brands May Still Attend
It is also worth noting that multiple reports have mentioned that only VW as a brand has declined to attend, and not the company as a whole. Essentially, you can expect some of VW’s other brands and franchises to attend the 2020 Paris Motor Show, where it is hoped that they will introduce new models to meet the needs of consumers in a brand-new decade.
VW’s decision to pull out of the Paris show comes just days after a similar announcement was made by an automobile manufacturer in the VW group. Lamborghini also decided not to participate in the Geneva Motor Show, which is set to be held this March. This news shocked customers and industry insiders alike, which was compounded again by the fact that the brand in question is so prestigious and has always attended the show in the past.
The Changing Status Quo
VW and Lamborghini’s choices have come as clear signs that the importance of traditional motor shows is on the decline. More and more automakers are opting to organise their own branded events when launching new car models, which often proves cheaper and more sustainable in the long term. This system means that companies also needn’t worry about rivals stealing the thunder of their new products by having to share their spotlights.
Another rumour on the ground is that classic auto shows are taking a knock due to the increasing awareness that the public has of the devastating effects of fossil fuels on the environment. It is just a whisper at this point, but some experts are predicting a notable consumer shift towards companies that focus on electric and biofuel vehicles instead of classic petrol models.
Whether this is the case or not remains to be seen, but at any rate, auto-manufacturers will need to consider eco-friendly designs over the coming years to meet the needs of an increasingly savvy customer base.
