Trying to look casual when you think you’ve been stood up can be tricky.
Picture it: you’re trying to look cool and calm and unflustered. You stare into the distance, but when the waitress starts looking annoyed, you realise “the distance” was actually in her direction. So you scan the menu. After counting three spelling mistakes and learning the names and ingredients of half the main courses, you’re bored.
As you begin to stew with resentment, your reading ability slips. When you realise you’ve been staring at the dessert page for ten minutes without a single word sinking in, you give up, reach over and take a sip of your drink, only to find you’ve drained it already. You try to make eye contact with the waitress, but she’s ignoring you. Understandably.
It’s in times like these that your laptop or tablet is your best friend. Too wound up to read? Distract yourself by doodling here, and get someone else’s sketch when you submit yours. I managed to kill that horrible half hour before lunchtime at work by playing with this! All you need to do is frown and look like you’re concentrating on something very important.

The only problem is that once you’ve sent your artwork off and looked at someone else’s doodle, it’s a bit of an anti-climax. Your little piece of brilliance has disappeared into the ether, and there’s no feedback, no praise, not even a little prize for your effort.
